Grounding the Root Chakra to open your energy with a guided practice that unites body and spirit — bringing balance, stability, and deep connection to the Earth.
Introduction
Throughout this post, you’ll see both “Muladhara” and “Root Chakra” — these terms mean the same thing. Muladhara is the Sanskrit word for “root.” Sanskrit is the ancient sacred language of India, used in spiritual teachings for thousands of years. The chakra system itself originates from these ancient Indian traditions, where energy flow through the body was studied as a pathway to balance and enlightenment.
Grounding is the Root chakra (muladhara) is the foundation of our energetic system. The place where we cultivate safety, stability, and connection with life itself. When this chakra is open and grounded, we feel calm, centered, and confident. When blocked, we may experience fear, instability, or restlessness.Â
This root chakra grounding meditation was born from a profound insight during a Vipassana retreat. It changed the way I understand grounding — not just as physical contact with the Earth, but as an energetic alignment that connects the subtle body with the physical one.Â
The Origin of Root- is the First Chakra Grounding TechniqueÂ
This meditation came to me during a Vipassana retreat as a sudden, transformative insight into what it truly means to be grounded. Since moving to Koh Phangan in 2016, I’ve lived barefoot almost every day — on my bike, in the streets, in nature, in shops, while hiking — everywhere. Shoes only come out when I travel to the mainland. One day, however, a simple accident revealed something deeper.Â
Philosophically, grounding is the art of remembering that spirit and matter are not separate. The Earth is not something beneath us — it’s something we belong to. The root teaches that connection to the ground is connection to life itself. When we root deeply, we participate in the great rhythm of being — steady, awake, and in tune with existence.
Why Walking Barefoot Isn’t Enough for True GroundingÂ
While hiking, I stepped on a stone that created a painful blood blister deep under my thick, leathery skin. I was surprised — not just by the pain, but by the energetic imbalance it reflected.Â

Even though I spent every day barefoot – touching the ground, hugging trees, living in constant contact with nature – I felt an unfamiliar disconnection inside. The pain made me question what “grounding” really means.Â
How could I not be grounded when my body was literally touching the Earth every day?Â
That moment became a turning point. It showed me that physical contact with nature doesn’t always equal energetic connection. I realized there’s a difference between walking on the Earth and belonging to it – between touching the ground and truly being grounded.Â
The Vipassana Retreat Discovery That Changed EverythingÂ
This question followed me into a Vipassana meditation retreat, where I spent days in silence, asking: “How can I ground myself more deeply than I already do?”Â
My curiosity about grounding had begun years earlier, in 2012–2013, when I still lived in the Netherlands and had not yet accepted my spiritual gifts as I do today. Around that time, I was fascinated by Dr. Mercola’s article “Ground Yourself.” Back then, I wore shoes outside and went barefoot inside. Every opportunity I had to walk barefoot outdoors felt liberating. That was my first step toward understanding grounding.
But it wasn’t until that Vipassana retreat in 2021 that I experienced a deeper truth:Â
Walking barefoot only grounds the physical body. True grounding happens when we also anchor the energy body – the subtle field that surrounds and animates our physical form.Â
This insight became the foundation of the root chakra meditation I now share.Â
Why This Root Chakra Technique Works DifferentlyÂ
When we walk barefoot, hug trees, or spend time in nature, we connect our physical body to the Earth. These are beautiful and beneficial practices.Â
But this meditation works on a deeper level. It grounds the energy body, the essence of who we are beyond the physical.Â
When you ground through your muladhara chakra, you’re not just stabilizing your body, you’re stabilizing your very sense of existence.Â
Many spiritual and psychological teachings describe grounding as the process of “coming home” to oneself. In Jungian psychology, this can be seen as reconnecting to the instinctual, earthy aspect of the psyche. The part that reminds us we belong to life. True grounding restores our relationship with the physical world, reminding us that spirit expresses itself through matter.Â
Understanding the Subtle Energy Body vs Physical BodyÂ
This meditation focuses on the subtle energy body, because the muladhara chakra exists as a connection point in this energetic field. Many common grounding practices—walking barefoot, eating red fruits and vegetables, hugging trees, working in the garden—help us anchor the physical body.
However, the chakra itself belongs to the subtle body, not the physical one. It’s made of energy, vibration, and consciousness.
That’s why this technique works so deeply, it grounds you from the inside out. When you ground from the subtle body, your physical body naturally follows.

The Car and Driver AnalogyÂ
Think of your physical body as a car and your subtle body as its driver.
You can polish and repair the car endlessly, but if the driver is distracted the journey will still feel off.
By working with your subtle energy field, this meditation allows you to open and ground this root chakra at its core, bringing stability and balance to both your physical and energetic being.
Where Is the Muladhara Chakra Located?Â
The root is located in the perineum, the area between the genitals and the anus. It forms the energetic foundation of your system—like the roots of a tree that hold everything above it steady.
Signs of a Blocked Root ChakraÂ
A blocked or imbalanced root can manifest as:
- Fear, insecurity, stress, restlessness
- Instability or financial insecurity
- Disconnection from the body or nature
- Physical discomfort in the legs, hips, or lower back
By learning to ground your muladhara chakra through grounding meditation and visualization, you restore energetic flow, emotional stability, and inner strength.
Why Muladhara Chakra Grounding Meditation Works: The Tree AnalogyÂ
The chakras live within the subtle body, yet they directly influence the physical one. When you ground the Muladhara, you nourish both.
Think of your body as a tree:
Your legs are the roots.Â
Your hips and core form the trunk.Â
Your arms and head extend as branches.
When the roots are weak, the tree sways and suffers. When the roots are strong, the entire structure flourishes.Â
A grounded person, like a deeply rooted tree, can weather any storm. The winds of fear, judgment, or stress may blow, but they do not uproot one who stands firmly in their energy.Â
Regular grounding practice strengthens your foundation so that outside influences can no longer disturb your inner balance.Â
Root Chakra Meditation Unlock InstructionsÂ
If you seek an effective and reliable way to connect with the Earth’s energy anytime, anywhere, this practice offers a simple yet profound method.
Practice This Meditation Anywhere
You don’t need to be in nature to ground your root chakra meditation:
- Indoors: at home or even in an apartment.
- Outdoors: in a garden, forest, or by the sea.
- While traveling: on a plane, in a car, or anywhere your body rests.
By visualizing energetic roots extending from your feet deep into the Earth, you open and balance the muladhara chakra, inviting feelings of stability, safety, and peace.
Body Scan Meditation for Enhanced Muladhara Chakra FocusÂ
If focusing on the points feels difficult, begin with a Body Scan Meditation. By scanning slowly from head to toe, you train your mind to inhabit your body more deeply.Â
This isn’t just relaxation, it’s embodiment.
You can bring your awareness into your bones, muscles, even your cells. As your mind learns to rest within your body, you’ll experience freedom and fluidity within it, making root chakra meditation easier and more powerful.Â

Interpreting Colors in Muladhara Chakra Grounding Meditation Feet
During this grounding meditation, you may see or feel colors shifting within your energy field. These hues often carry intuitive meaning:
- Left leg (feminine energy): connection with your feminine aspectÂ
- Right leg (masculine energy): connection with your masculine aspect
- Perineum (muladhara chakra energy): connection with your core selfÂ
- Common colors: White / Gold / Indigo Blue / Light Blue / Green / Yellow / Orange / Red / Brown
Let these colors flow naturally—there’s no need to control them. They are the language of your energy body expressing balance.Â
How Often Should You Practice?Â
- First 3 days: once each morningÂ
- Next 3 days: morning and eveningÂ
With consistency, you’ll find that just thinking of grounding makes your energy roots extend automatically. Eventually, it will take only seconds to connect.Â
Grounding then becomes part of your natural rhythm—available anytime you need calm and clarity.Â
The Transformative Power of Daily is the Grounding the Root Chakra Grounding for Overcoming Fear
By practicing this grounding meditation daily, you’ll notice profound changes in how grounded you feel. Expect more calmness and inner peace, less restlessness, warmer feet, and even improvements in your skin. When you catch yourself becoming restless or rushing, simply pause—ground yourself and find stability once you have experience with the technique—and watch as calmness naturally returns.Â
Better grounding strengthens your feeling of safety and security while overcoming fear, restlessness, worry, stress, anger, anxiety, fear of speaking, and the need to control everything. When we’re ungrounded, fear takes over and influences our entire being, creating a cascade of problems—anger, frustration, sadness, and grief.
At its core, most of our struggles stem from excessive fear.Â
This practice gives you a direct way to address the root cause by literally strengthening your energetic roots.Â
