Meditation to balance masculine and feminine energy is one of the most overlooked aspects of meditation. When these two forces are out of harmony, meditation can feel restless, blocked, or unsteady. But when they flow in balance, awareness deepens, the body feels lighter, and stillness becomes natural.
Have you ever noticed during meditation that your body pulls slightly to one side, or that the energy in your head feels heavier on the left or right? These subtle sensations are often signs of imbalance between masculine and feminine energies within us.
Meditation is not only about quieting the mind — it is also about allowing energy to flow evenly through the body. When these inner polarities are in harmony, stillness deepens and awareness expands. When they are out of balance, practice can feel restless, lopsided, or blocked.
I came to this understanding through my own practice. During meditation — especially at Vipassana retreats and other Buddhist teachings — I followed the traditional instruction of placing the left hand below and the right hand on top, with the thumbs lightly touching. This is how Buddha is often depicted, and I was told to do the same.
But every retreat I attended, my body would start to pull heavily to the left side. It felt like my body wanted to lay down. I wasn’t tired or sleepy — in fact, outside meditation I was energized and alert — yet during practice, the pull became overwhelming.
I asked monks and teachers why this was happening, and the answer was always the same: “You’re sleepy. You’re lazy. You’re tired.” But I knew this wasn’t true. So I began to ask deeper questions: Why do we place the left hand below and the right on top? Why is my body responding like this?
Eventually, during meditation, an answer arose from within me. I experimented with switching my hand positions, noticing how the energy shifted, and the effect was drastic. Suddenly I felt more balanced. My physical posture became steadier. My left side — which had always been stronger and carried more feminine energy — began to harmonize with my right side.
Over time, not only my meditation but my physical body changed. I even noticed physical changes over time — subtle shifts in my body that reflected the balancing of energies. For me this showed up as better posture, a stronger sense of balance, and more inner peace. These things will look different for each person, but the principle is the same: when we work on our subtle body, we also influence our physical and emotional body.
I started sharing this method with other meditators, and they too began experiencing deeper stillness and balance. Once you understand this technique, you’ll find that you can balance masculine and feminine energy not only through hand placement but also mentally, simply by focusing inward.

Understanding Masculine and Feminine Energy
Before we move into the practice, it helps to understand what these energies represent.
The masculine energy is often associated with structure, clarity, direction, and focus. It is the energy that organizes, protects, and acts.
The feminine energy embodies receptivity, intuition, flow, andnurturing. It is the energy that feels, listens, and opens.
Every person carries both. They are not limited by gender. They are complementary forces — like inhaling and exhaling. Too much masculine can feel rigid or controlling; too much feminine can feel passive or ungrounded. Balance is what creates harmony, and meditation helps us to balance masculine and feminine energy.
What the Left and Right Side Represent
In meditation, the left and right sides of the body are often seen as reflections of these inner polarities.
The right side of the body is generally linked with the masculine principle. It represents action, willpower, logic, and clarity. A pull or heaviness on the right side during meditation may suggest an overactivity of masculine energy — pushing too hard, controlling too much, or staying stuck in the head rather than flowing with the heart.
The left side of the body is commonly connected to the feminine principle. It represents intuition, receptivity, creativity, and softness. A pull to the left during meditation may signal an excess of feminine energy — feeling too passive, ungrounded, or drifting without direction.
Noticing these subtle pulls can guide us. Instead of labeling one side as “good” or “bad,” we can use them as feedback for what the inner system is leaning toward in that moment. Meditation then becomes a way to restore harmony and to balance masculine and feminine energy instead of reinforcing imbalance
Why Posture Matters in Energy Balance
Traditional meditation hand postures (mudras) are often taught in a fixed way, but not every practitioner experiences how to balance masculine and feminine energy through them. In Buddhist tradition, this hand posture symbolizes balance and surrender. But while it carries symbolic meaning, it doesn’t always serve every body’s unique energy flow. The way we hold our hands can subtly affect how energy flows through the body and mind.
For some, the classic posture intensifies an existing imbalance, creating more pull to one side of the head or body. Learning to adjust hand position according to your own energetic response allows meditation to support balance rather than reinforce imbalance.
Step-by-Step Test: Discovering Your Energetic Balance
Here is the method as I teach it. Take your time, sit quietly, and notice what arises without trying to change it.

Sit comfortably. Take your meditation seat — on a cushion, chair, or bench. Keep the spine upright yet relaxed. Place your hands gently in your lap.
Place your hands. Rest them on top of each other, choosing what feels more natural — either the right hand on top with the left below, or the left hand on top with the right below. Let the thumbs touch lightly.

Close your eyes. Allow the body to settle and bring your awareness to the forehead, especially the area between the eyebrows — the third eye.
Notice. What is happening in your forehead? Is the energy pulling to the left or to the right when observed from the middle of the third eye? This sensation is usually subtle. It may feel like a gentle pull, a light pressure, or even a drift of awareness. It is not pain, and it is not imagination — it’s simply your awareness picking up the flow of energy.
Switch positions if needed. For example, if your left hand is on the bottom and the energy pulls strongly toward the far left side of the forehead — closer to the left temple — then change the position. Place the right hand on the bottom and the left on top, with the thumbs gently touching.
Observe again. Did the energy shift? Does it now pull toward the right side of the forehead? Or are you centered again at the middle of the forehead, the third eye?
- Fine-tuning with thumbs. If the energy pulls too slightly to one side, you can make subtle adjustments with the thumbs. For instance, if the shift moved you too far to right, bring the right thumb slightly inward and gently cover it with the left thumb – this will make the energy move more to the third eye. The thumbs act like an energy bridge, completing a subtle circuit in the body. Small shifts with the thumbs create delicate adjustments in the flow, like tuning an instrument.
The outer hand (the one resting on bottom) corresponds to the energy that is more active. The inner hand (on top) corresponds to the receptive counterpart. When I speak of inside and outside, I mean the palm as the inside and the back of the hand as the outside — no matter which hand is above or below. By adjusting your hand placement, you can influence which energy is invited to soften and which to strengthen.
By experimenting with hand placement and thumb adjustments, you directly learn how to balance masculine and feminine energy in the body and mind.
What You May Experience when do Meditation to Balance Your Masculine and Feminine Energy
The shift may be subtle. You may feel:
A stronger pull toward one temple or side of the head
A dissolving of that pull into balance
A lightness in the forehead or third eye region
Greater stillness of mind when the energies come into harmony
Each experience is valid. Trust what you feel, not what you think you should feel. These subtle shifts are signs that you are beginning to balance masculine and feminine energy.
Practical Advice for Ongoing Practice
Use this hand adjustment at the beginning of your meditation to find balance. You can include this check-in at the start of every meditation. It only takes a minute, but it can change the depth of your entire session.
Once balance is established, remain with that posture for the session.
Over time, you may notice your need for adjustment changes — this is natural.
Avoid forcing or overanalyzing. The practice is about awareness and subtle listening.
